When the slaves were freed, they celebrated by drinking red soda, a luxury that they hadn’t been able to have as slaves. So it has since become a tradition to drink red soda on Juneteenth.

Many people also celebrate the day by eating red foods such as strawberry pie, red velvet cake or even barbecue meat that has been hand dyed. The red color symbolizes perseverance and represents the struggle that the slaves endured. ~hitc.com
